Our purpose

We are an independent road safety charity that represents the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM RoadSmart) in the Maidenhead, Wokingham, Windsor, Slough and Reading areas and their immediate surroundings. Our financial support is provided wholly by our members.

Our purpose is to promote a high standard of driving by delivering the IAM RoadSmart advanced driving courses and fostering a community of passionate, enthusiastic and skilled drivers, working to make UK roadways safer.

We have a place waiting for you

We provide on-road coaching for drivers with a full licence who wish to improve their driving and have purchased a course from IAM RoadSmart. Over half a million people have qualified as advanced drivers on our flagship Advanced Driver course – Quality Assured by the DVSA. With a commitment to complete the comprehensive course, lots of practice and a willingness to modify those bad driving habits, you could add your name to the list, and enhance your driving skills for life.

Having registered with IAM centrally, you will be allocated to our Group as an Associate. We teach the Advanced Driving Course and other programmes by engaging you with one of our IMI trained Observers. Following a series of live observed driving sessions in your own vehicle, you will reach ‘test ready’ standards – and once you have passed your test you become a Full member of TVGAM.

Why advanced driving?

Based on the UK Police Driver’s Handbook called Roadcraft, advanced driving is the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely, systematically and smoothly, using road and traffic conditions to progress unobtrusively with skill and responsibility.

This skill requires a positive but courteous attitude and a high standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective all-round observation, anticipation and planning. The vehicle will always be at the right speed with the correct gear engaged and can always be stopped safely on its own side of the road in the distance that can be seen to be clear.

Our team Committee and volunteers

All of the Committee are volunteers who are elected annually by  the membership. We have deliberately kept the size of the Committee small for flexibility and the ability to react quickly when necessary.

The other volunteers have been co-opted by the Committee for their specifc roles in line with their skills and experience. If you feel that you would like help in any way please know that all additional volunteers will be welcomed at any time. Use the form below to get in touch today!
