Details

Open Spaces Society is Britain’s oldest national conservation body. Founded in 1865 it went on to form the National Trust and other organisations. Small yet feisty, it has been at the forefront of the protection of common land, town and village greens, other open spaces, and public paths and other highways, and our rights there, throughout its existence. Uniquely, the society represents all categories of legitimate user on all categories of highway, and last year helped to save an unclassified road in Gloucestershire from closure in the magistrates’ court.

Kate is also a vice-president of the Ramblers, and vice-chair of the Campaign for National Parks and of the Dartmoor Preservation Association, and patron of the Walkers are Welcome Towns Network.

Kate will tell us a bit about the fascinating history of the Open Spaces Society as well as its current battles, and how we can all play a part in making our towns and countryside better places for people to enjoy
