New Zealand Speed Awareness Video

It only takes one second to change a life forever. A reminder that road safety isn’t just about being a “good driver” it’s about having the margin to survive someone else’s mistake.

The video shows a conversation between two men just before an inevitable crash. One made a “simple mistake” by pulling out too early. The other was driving just a little too fast to stop. They aren’t reckless drivers. They are ordinary people whose lives are about to be shattered in a way they can never take back.

This isn’t just a powerful video; it’s a reflection of a global public health crisis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and recent data: 1.19 Million Lives: Every year, road traffic crashes claim approximately 1.19 million lives globally. That is nearly 3,300 deaths every single day.

Shockingly, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years. Speed is a factor in approximately one-third of all fatal crashes.

Even a small increase in speed—say from 50 km/h to 65 km/h—can make a pedestrian four times more likely to die if hit. Road crashes cost most countries around 3% of their GDP, creating a massive economic burden alongside the human tragedy.

The advert’s message is clear: Other people make mistakes. As drivers, our speed is our only tool to compensate for those mistakes. When we slow down, we give ourselves: More time to perceive a hazard. Shorter distance to bring the vehicle to a full stop. Reduced impact energy if a collision does happen, which often means the difference between a minor injury and a fatality.

We often treat speed limits as “guidelines” and our cars as “safe bubbles.” But we are all vulnerable.
